Getting the most from Syndicate Places

Jun 24, 2014

With the summer season for Roe bucks now a few weeks away from the rut and stag season in Scotland about to start it’s time to think about getting the most from your syndicate stalking permissions. For those stalkers already with places and the many who will take on their first place there’s a lot to think about and here are some top tips to help ensure that you can get the most out of your syndicate place.

Many stalkers when taking on a place use stalking time to learn their ground and while this can result is opportunities and exciting stalking it does often see the stalker walking the ground blindly and missing out. Always try to get local knowledge before hand and get out with someone who knows the ground and can show you round and give you some key pointers first. A good thing to do is study available maps and the woodland cover, any tracks or roads and certainly know your boundaries. This gives you some good ideas about how to access certain areas and where deer are likely to move out from. Also think about escape routes and shortcuts for those times where you need to get off the ground quickly like when the heavens open on you!

Always try to give yourself the best time on the ground, avoid those times when perhaps members of the public may visit or the deer are unlikely to be mooching about. For those who travel to their permissions often getting an evening and following morning stalk is a great way to plan. That way the stalker can travel to the ground and stalk, have the night locally and stalk the next morning before either resting or travelling home. Or simply make a weekend of it as many do.

The most important thing though is that the higher the amount of time and number visits spent on the ground, the better you learn your ground the more successfully you will stalk it. Always stay positive and remember that deer stalking is a leisure activity so enjoy the experience and don’t get frustrated just because you have a bad run of luck. Best of luck all.
