Sika Deer

The Japanese Sika deer is a fascinating species with an incredible vocal range that also prove to be excellent swimmers capable of swimming several miles in the sea. The Sika deer are famous for their loud rising and falling whistle in the rut that is made by the males. Sika are often a very difficult species to stalk depending where in the UK you go because of their wary and alert nature.

They like to browse and graze and can enjoy crops, grassland, establishing trees, bushes and shrubs much to the irritation of land owners. The Sika deer were introduced to parks in the UK from around 1860, but escapes and deliberate releases have seen to the establishing themselves in several parts of the UK.

Sika deer are considered to be sacred in Japanese culture but here in the UK as an introduced species that can interbreed with the red deer and are considered by many to be pests. They do however provide challenging stalking and during the rut put on a great show if you are lucky enough to observe them.
