Red Deer

The Red deer is one of our two Native deer and Britain's largest free living land mammal. The red deer have been present here since the last ice age where they migrated to Britain from the European mainland some 11000 years ago. The destruction and clearances of Britain's natural forest led to a massive decline of red deer populations throughout the UK which were pocketed to the Scottish Highlands, parts of England and South West Scotland.
There are incredible variations between the size of Red deer across the UK because of environmental variations. With it being much colder in the highlands of Scotland compared to the lowlands of England, the variation in available food and growing seasons for it, the Red deer of the Highlands are often only half the body weight of their lowland relatives.
The golden rule when stalking and shooting Red deer is thinking carefully about where they are before the shot. Trying to drag 100kg of dead weight up a valley side and then another half a mile back to a track is a mistake you would only make once!
